PHOENIX ELLER
Metalsmithing and Jewelry
My name is Phoenix Eller. I am a student in metalsmithing and jewelry design at College for Creative Studies. I was born in 1998 in my parents home in Oakland Township, Michigan.
My early childhood was spent as part of “The New Church of Swedenborg” (a branch of christianity). “The New Church” has its own town in Pennsylvania with some of my earliest recollections are of the very beautiful gothic style cathedral/castle buildings.
I grew up going to the city of Detroit with my parents where I was inspired by many of the buildings, particularly the churches. These visits to the city exposed me to the urban industrial landscape both decaying and operational. My father took photos for a car parts factory and I always loved seeing the machines.
My art is heavily inspired by these gothic structures and religious architecture. It combines the influence of rich architectural elements with a factory inspired, machine, and industrial, seemingly futuristic aesthetic.
PHOENIX ELLER
My work is inspired by religious architecture and art in combination with future/industrial and machine aesthetics. Both religion and industry have always occupied a large space in modern human society and both have achieved astonishing feats of architecture for the purpose of beauty, as well as function. These places are awe-inspiring, I can feel all of the years of work, pain, belief and intention. I am creating items with monumental structure in intimate form, in an attempt to bring a small piece of this feeling to something that can be worn as a talisman.
