SALLY SPINALE ARREDONDO

As a young child, Sally was exposed to art from the moment she could walk. At 18 months old, she started Mexican ballet folkloric dance, and as she got older, her interest in art broadened to include drawing, painting, sculpting, singing, playing guitar, piano, drums, and competing in pageantry. Sally has always had a love of learning and a strong passion for everything she does, and her artistic abilities were influenced greatly by her mother and nonna.

After high school, Sally began a career in the cosmetology industry, using shears in place of a pencil and a different type of brush while hair was her canvas. However, she felt like she wanted more and decided to pursue a degree. She tried studying medicine but found it foreign and strange. When she asked her mother for advice, she was told to pursue what she had always loved, art. Sally set her sights on the College for Creative Studies, where she was inspired by many of the alumni she had met throughout her life as she explored art.

Initially, Sally's heart was set on transportation design, but she neglected her passion and natural ability to captivate her audience with her keen sense of color application. Most of her hobbies and interests have color in common, and she not only enjoys working with her hands but also has a distinct focus on the relationship between handmade and digital application. While pursuing her BFA in Fiber & Textile Design with a minor in digital fabrication, Sally obtained many scholarships, made the dean's list, and most recently, placed 2nd in an international student competition for windows wear and Kate Spade in New York.

When creating her thesis, "Remember Me," Sally thought about how she wanted to impact her local community. She volunteered to curate a silent auction fundraiser for the Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation, and she hopes to continue making a positive impact through her art.

SALLY SPINALE ARREDONDO

My artwork is deeply inspired by my personal experiences and cultural heritage, exploring the intersection of Mexican folk art, femininity, and digital fabrication techniques. Growing up, I was fascinated by the traditional Mexican dresses I wore and the stories, meanings, and symbolism behind them. This fascination continues to inspire my work today. My goal is to modernize Mexican folk art while preserving its cultural roots and craft methodologies. Through the use of digital fabrication techniques, I am able to infuse new life into traditional materials and techniques, creating pieces that celebrate the rich history and symbolism of Mexican folk art while also pushing it into the 21st century. Femininity is a central theme in all my artwork. I celebrate the strength and power of femininity by incorporating feminine shapes, embellishments, and romantic textures. Merging Mexican folk art and femininity, I aim to create a sense of freedom and self-discovery, inviting viewers to embrace their own femininity and the richness of Mexican culture. My ultimate goal is to showcase the beauty of Mexican culture through a modern lens, using my artwork as a tool to inspire and educate others.
