ELLERY HATOPP
For much of my life I have used art as a vehicle to discover the depths of my creativity, away from the anxieties of reality. Being somewhat of a control freak, my art is the only time I willingly give up control to unbridled curiosity. My practice provides me a space to be reckless and lawlessly curious.
My senior thesis has been an exploration of how opposites attract. There is an unmistakable sense of safety in objects that match, no need for investigation. But safety has never lead to inspiration for me.
As a metalsmith and jeweler my fascination with opposites took root in the most unexpected material, resin. Its versatility and endless applications opened my imagination to all new possibilities. While metal is often easier to control, resin can be irrepressible. Resin is somewhat of a contradiction and opposite to its self. Resin begins as a liquid and, through a chemical reaction referred to as curing, becomes a solid, metamorphosizing into a durable material with endless potential.
Through much trial and error I have been able to produce a cohesive collection of interactive jewelry that highlights my fascination with the beauty of metal and resin.
