VINCENT HARRISON

Mosaic Chimenea

“As life for me feels a growth in many ways, one avenue of growth has been working bigger in my clay practice and not holding myself back in my creative process. Coil-building felt like a perfect fit for large-scale work as I enjoy the repetitive nature of the process. Through instruction, I have developed a greater understanding of how to coil build more evenly, specifically focusing on construction techniques.

With my mosaic chimenea, it has two reasons for its construction. The first reason is of the chimenea itself. It exist as a symbol of reflection and prosperity, as sitting by a camp fire has been a muse of openness with one’s self and being in a surrounding with those in my life; while the symbol of prosperity comes from the understanding of a consistent attempt to be at one’s best self even when the attempts feel strenuously repetitive like adhering mosaic tiles and grouting. Second reason is why I choose to adorn my piece as a mosaic. I initially wanted to create wall mount mosaic, however in the early stages of what I wanted to depict in the mosaic did not have my level of fullness in my inspiration that I could find at the time, but the thought and drive to still work to create a mosaic stuck with me.

My tiles were specifically chosen for the contrast of they bring to each other as well as a connotation I placed on them. The stone textured tiles represents the rough road everyone has to go through in their challenges of life. The gold infusion tiles represents prosperity gained when one puts in the time and effort needed to reach one’s best self. Together both tiles gives the chimenea a rough and glossy representation the journey through life.”
